Subs
Last week we had a sub in our classes, during the day we went to the bowling alley to bowl for PE. During this time one of the students were chewing, the sub saw the student chewing but did not feel that he needed to say anything to the student or to myself. Do subs think that they do not need to say something when students are breaking the school rules?

Hey Meghan, nice choice of background by the way ;) I think that a lot of subs don't feel like trying to enforce rules, for fear of confrontation with the students. As we all know, most subs don't command the same authority over the students as the regular teacher does. And, if the sub doesn't like the class, well, they never have to come back!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Brandy on this one, but with one qualifier. In the school district I'm in, some subs have been "black balled" because they let kids get away with too much. If a student is breaking a well-known school rule by using tabacco (which most schools have a zero tolerance policy) it is the sub's responsibility to ensure all of the students are in compliance. If the sub doesn't maintain classroom mangement practices, the other students won't respect them either. Subs are there to teach too - not to be the students' friend. I do understand, however, how much easier it would be to just ignore such behavior.
